Asuman Türkün
Asuman Türkün completed her secondary education at Robert College. She graduated from the Department of City and Regional Planning, Middle East Technical University in 1980. She got her master’s degree in 1990 and PhD degree in 1998 from the same department. In her master’s thesis, she analyzed the dynamics of capital accumulation in the underdeveloped regions of Turkey. In her PhD dissertation, she analyzed the transformations in newly industrializing cities, in the context of Denizli. Between 1995-2005, she worked at the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design as well as the Department of Political Science at Bilkent University in Ankara and gave lessons on urban sociology, social movements, globalization and socio-spatial transformation. Since 2006, she has been working at Yıldız Technical University, Department of City and Regional Planning in Istanbul. Her research on the place of female labor in industrial restructuring in the textile sector in Istanbul has been published as a book, “New Production Processes and Female Labor” by the General Directorate for the Status and Problems of Women in 1999 (together with Prof. Dr. Ayda Eraydın). And her research on the socio-spatial transformation of the Citadel Area in Ankara was published in the book “The Stash of the City: The Ankara Citadel” by İletişim in 2004 (together with Prof. Dr. Zuhal Ulusoy). She conducted a research (supported by TUBİTAK-Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Institute) on six “urban regeneration/transformation areas” in Istanbul between 2008 and 2010. The findings of this research have been published in the book, “Property, Place and People: Urban Transformation in Istanbul” by İstanbul Bilgi University Publications in March 2014. She has currently been conducting a research, named “Drivers and Scenarios for the Reconfiguration of Historic City Centers: The Case of Beyoglu Istanbul" with the support of TUBITAK. Her research areas include industrial geography, urban restructuring; urban transformation, methodology in social sciences and gender studies. She has many publications on these topics in various national and international journals and books.
